چکیده

ABSTRACT The Charnov–Bull model of differential fitness is often used to explain the evolution and maintenance temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). Most tests focus on morphological proxies fitness, such as size traits, whereas early life physiological traits that are closely related lifetime might provide a framework for generalizing across taxa. One trait strength early-life immune response, which strongly linked survival fitness. Here, we manipulated temperature, variance in test using trait, system strength, snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). We found no evidence sex-specific differences bactericidal capacity hatchling blood, mean temperature influences capacity. However, did find fluctuating incubation (i.e. more naturalized regime) associated with greater compared constant incubation. also egg mass, proxy maternal provisioning, positively Our findings suggest reptiles unrelated our measure innate immunity. study underlines how response condition dependent life, questions biological relevance experimental studies ectotherm development.

Dmrt1 expression in response to estrogen treatment in a reptile with temperature-dependent sex determination.

Dmrt1 has been implicated as an important factor in sex determination in all classes of vertebrates, including reptiles with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). Specifically, early embryonic expression of Dmrt1 appears to be an integral part of normal testicular development in vertebrates. Recently, a number of TSD studies have placed Dmrt1 expression at the top of a short list of pu...

Modelling development of reptile embryos under fluctuating temperature regimes.

An increase in temperature, within bounds, will accelerate development of reptile embryos, and morphogenesis can be normal over a range of temperatures despite those varying rates of development. Less well understood is the form of the relationship that best describes variation in developmental rate with temperature. In this article, we apply a linear degree.hour model, an empirical curvilinear...

Does sex-ratio selection influence nest-site choice in a reptile with temperature-dependent sex determination?

Evolutionary theory predicts that dioecious species should produce a balanced primary sex ratio maintained by frequency-dependent selection. Organisms with environmental sex determination, however, are vulnerable to maladaptive sex ratios, because environmental conditions vary spatio-temporally. For reptiles with temperature-dependent sex determination, nest-site choice is a behavioural materna...

Temperature-dependent sex determination

Reptiles posses two main mechanisms of sex determination. In some species the sex of the individual is determined at conception by sex factors contained in sex chromosomes (termed genotypic sex determination or GSD). However, in other species sex is determined after conception by the environmental temperature during incubation and cannot be predicted by zygotic genotype (Bull, 1983; Valenzuela ...

Differential intron retention in Jumonji chromatin modifier genes is implicated in reptile temperature-dependent sex determination

In many vertebrates, sex of offspring is determined by external environmental cues rather than by sex chromosomes. In reptiles, for instance, temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) is common. Despite decades of work, the mechanism by which temperature is converted into a sex-determining signal remains mysterious. This is partly because it is difficult to distinguish the primary molecular...
